MATCH PREVIEW | Rhinos and Saints clash for place at Wembley

A place at Wembley Stadium and the Betfred Women's Challenge Cup Final is at stake this Sunday as two of the competition's previous winners, Leeds Rhinos and St Helens, go head to head at Doncaster's Eco-Power Stadium, kick off 1pm.

Both teams qualified for the final four with high-scoring wins in their quarter finals as the Rhinos confidently defeated Cardiff Demons 68-0 at AMT Headingley, whilst Saints also scored 68 points in their victory over Barrow Raiders. Now with Wembley in sight, both sides meet for the sixth time in Cup history looking to join either Wigan or York at the finale later this month.

Opposition

One team that has been Leeds' nemesis in the Challenge Cup competition is the eight-time champions St Helens, as the Red Vee look to bounce back to winning ways after last year's Final defeat to Wigan Warriors.

The clubs have met in all but two Cup campaigns since the Rhinos team was established in 2018 and St Helens took over the Thatto Heath programme in the same year. Meeting for the first time - ironically at the semi-final stage - during the 2019 season, a closely fought contest set the tone for years to come as Caitlin Beevers' sensational effort in the final moments sent the Rhinos through to their second consecutive final. Saints got their revenge in 2021 as the eventual Champions walked through Leeds 20-12 enroute to lifting the Cup for the first of four consecutive seasons.

The next three years saw the Rhinos and Saints meet at the final stage, with Saints coming away victorious on every occasion. 2022's win at Elland Road saw Derek Hardman's side become the second side since Leeds to win back to back titles in a tight 18-8 score, before a move to Wembley Stadium in 2023 and 2024 saw the club comfortably win both final appearances under Matty Smith by a collective score of 42 points for to 8 points against.

After having their winning run in the competition broken by Wigan in last year's final, Saints have put themselves back as one of the frontrunners for the 2026 title with a confident season so far. Three tries from Shona Hoyle led the scoring in an opening 44-14 win over Huddersfield Giants before a 62-4 triumph over Catalans Dragons saw three tries fom both Leah Burke and Danielle McGifford was part of a wider 12-try performance. Locked in for a quarter final spot, the try scoring continued against Barrow a fortnight ago as McGifford's second half trick of the season was backed up by two tries from Paige Travis and Rachael Woosey as well as tries for Burke, Hoyle, Katie Mottershead, Luci McColm, Rebecca Rotheram and Vicky Whitfield.

15 players from last year's final squad have remained with the side in 2026, but the club made sure to bring experience back with the return of Paige Travis from the NRL. Alongside the four-time Cup champion, sisters Jadine and Emme McVernon were recruited alongside Mikayla Gillespie as the club looks to add its first piece of silverware of the year under the Wembley arch.
